| As part of a global network of more than 177 Red Cross and
Red Crescent societies called the International Red Cross Movement, the
American Red Cross works to relieve human suffering and empower people with
the skills they need to help themselves. Programs are designed to meet
ever-changing humanitarian needs and improve the human condition. Guided by
seven Fundamental Principles - Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality,
Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality - the American Red
Cross strives to restore dignity and hope to the most vulnerable people
around the world. The American Red Cross is currently working with our
sister societies in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Americas
and in the former Soviet Union. With the generous support of the American
people, the American Red Cross has developed into one of the strongest and
most respected humanitarian service organizations in the world.
Based on the needs of the world's most vulnerable people and the
organization's responsibility and capacity to provide humanitarian
assistance, the American Red Cross has developed six areas of expertise:
- Emergency Disaster Response
- Primary Health Care Programs
- Feeding Programs
- Helping Our Red Cross Partners
- Tracing and Red Cross Messages (for families
separated by disaster, armed conflict, civil unrest, and Family tracing
for the survivors of WWII-related events such as The Holocaust)
- Dissemination of International Humanitarian Law
(Training in humanitarian principles, international humanitarian law and
the specific provisions of the Geneva Conventions - the framework of
rights that protects people caught in international conflict)
